FINALLY! A chicken salt that’s not full of nasties!

Chicken salt on chips
From the moment our babies come into the world, we worry. We worry about what not to bathe or moisturise them in, whether or not the ‘tummy stuff’ their experiencing is ‘normal’, we worry that they’re gaining weight too slowly – or too fast… And of course, we worry about what we’re putting in their mouths - what food we’re giving them – what’s in it, if it’s natural, if it’s good for them.

Our babies inevitably come ahead of us as far as priorities go – it’s just the way it is. We’d throw ourselves in front of a bus before letting any harm come to them. So, why is it then, that when it comes to food, so many parents become complacent? By no means am I judging ANY parenting decision made by others. We all know, we do what we have to, to get by – but personally, I found that there were very minimal child friendly options when it comes to flavourings!

There are thousands of foods and food flavourings on the market, marketed at children. The issue is, when you turn the packaging around and have a look at the ingredients list – which, let’s be honest, not everyone does - you’re often faced with unhealthy, unnecessary, indecipherable items or codes.

Now, I could talk about every product out there, but I’d probably be on about it for a good three months and would have definitely lost your attention within the first hour – so I’ll narrow it down. The section of the market that really concerned me as, a mother, was the lack of natural, healthy options when it came chicken salts. You wouldn’t think it’d be all that bad, would you? A bit of salt and some natural chicken elements, right? Wrong. I did my research and was astounded by the fact that the majority of chicken salts contained anti-caking agents (those numbers in brackets mean CHEMICALS), monosodium glutamate or yeast extract (yes, friends, that’s MSG), disodium inosinate and riboflavin, just to name just a few.

Pretty much everyone has heard of MSG, but not everyone knows why it is that we shouldn’t have it. In a nutshell, MSG or monosodium glutamate is a flavour enhancer. It is derived from glutamate, which is an amino acid that the human body can produce. It has been claimed that it can cause headaches, flushing, sweating, facial pressure or tightness, heart palpitations, chest pain and nausea (the list goes on), when consumed in high volume. There are also claims of long term effects, such as nerve cell damage, but there are no human studies to support this – the only studies recorded have been conducted on mice.

I don’t know about you, but Scientific proof or not, I’m not about to risk my children’s health, my partner’s or my own, just to add a bit of flavour to my meal. Speculation, people’s physical and almost immediate reactions to consuming MSG and studies on mice are more than enough to keep me well clear of it.

So, as you can imagine, I was horrified to find that MSG and some of it’s lesser known friends were hiding in the flavourings that pretty much all of us would have used or consumed at one time or another! And it was STILL going onto children’s food? I personally couldn’t do it to my kids… So, I decided not to. By no means was I about to deprive them of the joys of flavoursome nosh - I just needed to find an option that was healthy and tasty. Again, I did my research, and again – I wasn’t all that happy with the results.

There’s a saying, ‘if you want something done properly, do it yourself’… So I did.
I am super proud to say that Broth of Life’s Chicken Salt contains nothing but natural, healthy ingredients. It’s a combination of Himalayan salt and our nutrient dense, organic, dehydrated chicken bone broth (filtered water, organic, free range chicken bones, organic celery, organic carrot, organic onion, organic garlic, pepper and apple cider vinegar) – the result? Pure, healthy yumminess! And most importantly, no chemicals, no preservative, no additives – and NO MSG! The kids love it, we love it – and I can go to bed at night knowing that the ‘chicken salty chips’ they gobbled up with their dinner were potentially the healthiest element on the plate… And that’s gotta be something to be proud of.

Life should be full of colours and flavours… Just not chemicals.
